The summer may be over, and winter is coming up fast, but that doesn’t mean that you need to give up your great tan. Indoor tanning salons give you access to high-quality indoor tanning beds to ensure you can keep your tan looking great with just a couple sessions a week, and it’ll help you keep that bronze look all winter long, especially in colder places. If you do plan on using indoor tanning beds, though, make sure you are using the right products on your body to get the best results from the tan, to keep your skin healthy and safe, and so you don’t damage the surface of the tanning beds. That’s where indoor tanning lotions come in, and they come in a variety of styles, such as bronzing lotions, tinglers, soothers, accelerators, etc. What are these lotions, and exactly what do they do?
What is a Bronzing Lotion?
Bronzing lotions, or bronzers, are a very popular type of tanning lotion that help you get a high quality bronze tan on your skin, of various shades depending on the product you get. The effects of a bronzer are temporary, and they help you get that sun-kissed, bronze look without having to be on the beach for hours at a time, multiple times a week, making your suntan pop. Ultimately, it works with your tan to darken its tones to the level you want. There are a few types of bronzers. Whether you go with all-natural lotions or ones with pigments, they are safe to use.
All-natural bronzing lotions will use a chemical known as dihydroxyacetone to create a chemical reaction with the dead cell skins that are located on the top of your skin. This will turn them a brown or brownish shade, depending on the intensity level of the lotion. Because it works on the dead skin over your existing tan, exfoliating after application of the bronzer will greatly reduce its effects.
Pigment style bronzing lotions get that darker tone by dyeing your skin with a pigment rather than altering your dead skin cells. There are no added risks to using the pigment method; however, the all-natural bronzer option is often the most popular version.
When looking at bronzing lotion bottles, you will get an idea of the tone of the bronzing effect by looking at its “X” value; a 400X bronzer will have a deeper tone than a 200X, for instance. Bronzers will also include moisturizers to help keep your skin healthy looking, and some may even include additives, like caffeine, to energize your skin and give it a healthy glow.
What Other Types of Lotions Are Available?
If bronzing isn’t what you are looking for in your tanning bed sessions, then there are several other indoor tanning bed lotions available to use besides bronzing lotions. Remember, you should always be using at least some form of indoor tanning bed lotion in order to reduce the amount of time you need for a session, and to protect your skin with moisturizers, essential vitamins, and other nutrients to keep youthful, glowing skin.
Accelerators and Maximizers
These types of lotions will allow you to get a tan from an indoor tanning bed much faster than you could out in the sun by intensifying the effect of the UV light from the tanning bed. These can be used by beginners to get a quick base tan before moving onto other lotions, like bronzing lotions, for maintenance. Because they intensify UV light, they also include a very high percentage of moisturizer to protect the skin from damage or burning, and your skin will continue to deepen in tone well after the tanning session (do not shower for 5-10 hours after your session).
Tingling and Heating Lotions
These types of lotions will increase the blood flow to your outer skin layers to boost cell oxygenation. Unlike bronzing lotions, these give you a gentle heating and tingling sensation (or cooling sensation, depending on the formulation) from nicotinate and benzyl. They boost the effects of the UV rays in the tanning bed, reducing your session length by increasing melanin production. These also include moisturizers to help you get a uniform tan.
If you are considering keeping your tan for the months that you can’t hit the beach, and if you want that bronze, deep-tan look, then getting a good quality bronzing lotion may be the best option for you.
